Q: Hi Nancy I have been digging up my canna and elephant blubs and not sure what is the right way to store them for next year. I placed them in paper grocery store bags. I put them in the basement in a old coal room, so they would be kept cold for the winter. Is that the right way to store them? Last year I left them in the ground, only a few came back, this time I decided I would dig them up. I would appreciate if you could tell me the best way to store them. I love your column, I read it every Friday.
Shelly, My friend stores hers in paper bags filled with shredded paper and overwinters them in their unheated garage attached garage. Temperature and humidity are the keys. Cool - 45 to 55 degrees with a humidity of 75 percent would be perfect. If you can come close, go for it. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
