How To Overwinter Potted Clematis

Question From: MICHIGAN
Q: Nancy, I have a Clematis that is planted in a large pot. How do I winterize this plant & pot outdoors in our Detroit Mi winter? Thank you

The best way to store the plant over winter is in an unheated garage or shed. If that is not possible take the plant out of the pot and plant it in a protected area. such as the North side of the house. Mulching with 3 to 4 inches of shredded leaves will also help protect it. If you put it in the garage, water it sparingly every few weeks to keep the soil slightly moist. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
