How To Prune Clematis Red Niobe Westerplate And Sweet Autumn

Question From: Basalt, Colorado, United States
Q: How should I prune my new red clematis Niobe and Westerplate? They are a different group from my Jackmanii which I cut down to six inches in early spring. Also, how about Sweet Autumn clematis's pruning?

A: Pat, Sounds like you are on your way to becoming a collector. How about getting a book on clematis. Westerplatte is a rebloomer that can be lightly pruned in late winter or very early spring. Niobe can be cut back hard - six inches in spring. Cut SA Clematis back to 6 inches in spring or it will eat up your garden. Happy Yardening, Nancy
