Q: What can I do to remove this excess growth from around the base of my maple tree

A: Use a hand pruner to cut the branches as close to the tree roots as possible. Once it is clean check weekly and scrape or pull off the tiny new shoots that emerge. Maples sucker as a result of stress from winter damage or drought. They think the may be dying.There is a liquid you can use from Bonide called Sucker Punch.
