How To Soak Seeds Before Starting Them

Question From: R. Gingras - NORTH CAROLINA
Q: Have a question, in starting seeds in a solution of seaweed extract 1/4 teaspoon to one quart of water for no longer then 30 min. the other, comes from the maker of the seaweed extract Ohrstrom's Maxicrop who states to use the same mixture as the first. solution , but states to soak seeds overnight please help, me , i also start my seeds indoors in rock wool cubes in a growing greenhouse . then i transfer the seedlings outdoors to my hobby greenhouse.

Rudy, Either method will work. I soak my seeds in hot water ( but not burning hot) overnight. They germinate very quickly. But some just do a short soak. Try it both ways and see what happens. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.

Comment: hi nancy I gather that you dont need to use the seaweed solution in starting seeds is that correct ? i thought maybe by doing so would expadite the process . i guess not thank you very much for your input ...Rudy

Rudi, the kelp is optional. Tests have shown seeds germinate faster using it. Kelp has all kinds of benefits and I do use it. That said you can grow nice plants without it. Some folks don't want to spend extra money. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
