How To Tell If A Black Gum Tree Is Male Or Female

Question From: Crossville, Tennessee, United States
Q: How do you tell if a black gum tree is a male or female?

Roger, I am not a trained arborist so I cannot answer your question. This tree is not sold in Michigan so my contacts were unable to advise me. Couldn't find much on the Internet, except that you must sex the tree when in bloom and some trees produce both male and female flowers. The good news is international woodie guru Mike Dirr loves this tree. I did find a nursery in Tennessee that grows it. I suggest you contact them ( walnuthillfarmsnursery.com, 931.967.2546) Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
