How To Winterize Climbing Rose

Question From: West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, United States
Q: How do I winterize a zephirin drouin climbing rose. I've had it one year and it is 5 feet tall with lots of branches and leaves. I also want to winterize a climbing rose that is 3 feet tall.It grows 2 different colored roses: orange and pink

A: If you can pull it off the trellis or what ever it is climbing on you can lay to on the ground and wrap it in burlap. Here's a website that illustrates how they do it in Minnesota: http://www.todayshomeowner.com/how-to-winterize-roses/. I hill up around the base of my roses with soil and mulch.
