Is It Good To Burn Lawns When Dormant

Question From: El Dorado, Arkansas, United States
Q: Several of my neighbors here in South Arkansas have burned their front yard. Is this really good for the lawn? I was always told that it allows weeds and things like sticker burrs to grow. I also heard a landscape architect say that if the winter weather does not get down below a certain temp, then the grass will not grow.

A: You got me on this one guy. Here in Michigan folks do burns on wild flower fields, but I never heard of burning turf. I would check with your County Extension Agent . I googled burning lawns in South Arkansas and came up with an article from the University of Arkansas. It gave mixed reviews and other suggestions. Here's the link. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
