Is It Good To Burn Lawns When Dormant

Question From: El Dorado, Arkansas, United States
Q: Several of my neighbors here in South Arkansas have burned their front yard. Is this really good for the lawn? I was always told that it allows weeds and things like sticker burrs to grow. I also heard a landscape architect say that if the winter weather does not get down below a certain temp, then the grass will not grow.

You got me on this one guy. Here in Michigan folks do burns on wild flower fields, but I never heard of burning turf. I would check with your County Extension Agent . I googled burning lawns in South Arkansas and came up with an article from the University of Arkansas. It gave mixed reviews and other suggestions. Here's the link. http://turf.uark.edu/turfhelp/archives/030810%20Burning%20Lawns.html Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
