Is It Normal For Katsura To Have New Growth Only At Top

Question From: Beverly, Massachusetts, United States
Q: 4 year old Katsura has 12" new growth and only on the top. Normal?

True trees put on most growth from the top and 12" is average. However they do expand in width as they do in height. I suggest you have your tree inspected by a certified arborist if you are concerned. Mulching around the tree and feeding in late fall with an organic slow release fertilizer, such as Espoma Tree Tone will help the tree with weather stress. Do not use tree spikes or chemical fertilizers. Fertilizing in the heat of summer can damage root systems and cause further stress. DO be sure to give your tree an inch to an inch and a half of water a week if Mother Nature fails to do so. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
