Is Regal Petticoat Maple Still A Good Choice

Question From: West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, United States
Q: In the Detroit News on 09/26/2014 you were very positive about the REGAL PETTICOAT MAPLE. Are you still very positive on that tree? Do they grow to 40 feet? We need a barrier to the late afternoon and early evening sun on the back of our home, where two patios are located.

A: It's still getting good reviews. If planted properly in the right spot it should mature to 40 feet or more. Imported from Canada, it is premium priced, which is limiting it's use. I look at pricing trees this way. Amortise the cost of the tree over a lifetime of enjoyment and see if the additional cost is worth it. Here's a recent review. Why You Should Plant It: Superior leaf colors during all growing seasons. In spring and summer each unusually colored leaf is a deep glossy green with a deep velvety purple underside. Autumn leaves turn aspen yellow on top and bright magenta pink on the underside accented with reds, oranges, and salmons. WOW, is all you can say about this tree in fall! With superior disease resistance this shade tree also has proven to be alkaline and salt tolerant as it matures. Best Nancy
