Ivy Topiary Has Sticky Substance On Leaves And Brown Coffee Grind Like Stuff On Stems

Question From: Ossining, New York, United States
Q: My indoor ivy topiary started with sticky goo on leaves now it has brown coffee grind stuff on stems? Help beautiful plant is it contagious to other plants????

That sticky goo comes from insects, usually aphids. The brown stuff may be sooty mold that grows on the sticky honey dew. Give your ivy a good bath - let it dry and spray the leaves top and bottom with a pesticide such as Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew. Repeat every 5 to 7 days until you see no more goo.
