Ivy Topiary Has Sticky Substance On Leaves And Brown Coffee Grind Like Stuff On Stems

Question From: Ossining, New York, United States
Q: My indoor ivy topiary started with sticky goo on leaves now it has brown coffee grind stuff on stems? Help beautiful plant is it contagious to other plants????

A: That sticky goo comes from insects, usually aphids. The brown stuff may be sooty mold that grows on the sticky honey dew. Give your ivy a good bath - let it dry and spray the leaves top and bottom with a pesticide such as Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew. Repeat every 5 to 7 days until you see no more goo.
