Japanese Maple Has Many Dead Branches After Harsh Winter

Question From: Plymouth, Michigan, United States
Q: I have a Japanese Maple that is about 6 ft tall. The last winter was devastating to it and a large number if branches are now dead. If the dead branches are pruned will growth develope next year? I hate to lost this very fine tree. Thanks!

The new growth will not replicate the old so it will not look the same and it depends on percentage of loss. If the tree did not produce enough leaves to feed itself this year and store food to produce spring growth it will die. Only time will tell. Best Nancy
