Large Conifer Tree Has Lots Of New Growth And Green Cones Falling From Tree

Question From: D. Knight - Mukilteo, Washington, United States
Q: I have a large conifer that appears to have lots of new growth mainly at the top portion of the very tall tree. I have also noticed a very large number of green cones falling from the tree. Branches that are loaded with new growth and many cones have come down in the slightest of wind. What could be causing this dropping of cones and now branches? Do I need to be worried?

When trees are stressed they produce lots of seeds. Heat and drought have stressed trees as have bitter cold winters. New growth is not a problem. Yellowing and thinning of needles indicates issues that should be looked at by a professional. To find a certified arborist go to www.tcia.org. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
