Little Leaf Linden Tree Leaves Are Curled And Leaf Grouping And Growth Pattern Is Very Strange

Question From: J. Melvin - Sunbury, Ohio, United States
Q: Hi Nancy, I have a little leaf Linden that is young, about 4-5 years old and about 4"-5" in diameter and about 13-15' tall. The tree this year looks very weird. It looks like the stems are bald and the leaves are grouped up on the outside of the branches. The leaves are hanging downward so no leaves or it looks like stems are on the top of the branches. The leaves are curled but have great color and do not look dead. Just has large open areas within the middle of the tree. We have had our yard fertilized but not sure if that would effect that large of a tree since our other plant material has not been effected. The only other issue we have close is our younger 2-3" diameter sycamore tree about 20-25' away. It is very thin looking also but I think the frost got to it so it has lost half of its leaves. The Linden was beautiful for 2 years and the last 2 years has been looking very rough. I have notice in the past that if it needs water the leaves will curly but nothing this bad in the past. Any advise would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks Jerry

Jerry, I recommend you get and onsite inspection from a certified arborist. To find a professional in your area go to www.tcia.org. When it comes to trees I don't believe in guessing. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
