Locust Tree Has Dead Branches Drops Seeds From Pods And Is Missing Usual Color

Question From: Mapleton, Utah, United States
Q: I have a 20 year old locust tree, which traditionally has a beautiful yellow cast to it this time of year. From a distance, the tree looks like it is backlit - it's gorgeous. This year - no such coloring. The canopy when you look up through it is sparse. Lots of dead branches. And the pods which usually drop as a unit just lost the seeds or whatever they are - there was a dusting of it all over under the tree and the stems are still attached to the branches. I can see no signs of distress on the trunk of the tree. It makes me sad - I love this tree. What could be the issue?

A: Kim, drought and excessive heat last year took it's toll on many trees. It may also have other issues. I recommend you enlist the services of a tree doctor, a certified arborist in your area to do an onsite inspection of this tree and advise you how it can be saved. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
