Maple Tree Pruned By Novice Is Getting Brown Leaves

Question From: VIRGINIA
Q: My maple was pruned by a novice about three weeks ago. Now it has several spots with brown leaves. What can I do to make sure that this tree survives.

A: Your best bet is to be sure the tree is given a consistant supply of water over the growing season so the soil stays moist but not sodden. Do not use any and chemicals, such as weed and feed on the lawn in the vicinity of the tree. I would also spread a two inch layer com compost on the surface of sol around the tree and mulch with a couple inches of shredded mulch, keeping the material at least 4 inches from the trunk of the tree.
