Question From: Connecticut, United States
Q: I have a mature hemlock that has root damage about 15 ft. or so from the base. A root about 2" in diameter was cut. Can I fertilize the tree to help it and if so what time of year can I do this?
A: Chances are the tree will be fine. Best thing you can do for it is mulch with 3 to 4 inches of wood chips and make sure it is well watered this fall. If you feel the need to fertilize it, I recommend Espoma Holly Tone according to package directions in late winter or early spring. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
