Once Thriving Daphne Bush Is Very Woody With Few Branches With Leaves

Question From: OREGON
Q: The past few years my huge daphne bush was full of leaves and flowers. This year it is very woody in the middle and hardly has any branches with leaves on them. Very few flowers this past spring. Is there anything I can do to promote branch growth or is it doomed? I’m afraid if I cut all the woody area back it will just be all wood and the branches won’t grow back. Thanks.

A: Daphnes are very fickle. Thrive for several years and all of a sudden up and die for no apparent reason. I think your time is better spent replacing it and put efforts elsewhere. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
