Only Tops Of Flaming Willow Branches Have Leaves

Question From: Grand Forks, North Dakota, United States
Q: I have a Flaming Willow that is about 10 feet tall. Only the top of the branches have leaves now. Why doesn't the middle and lower part of the branches have leaves? It's planted in the south backyard. Is it because there is another tree planted beside it and it's not getting enough sun? Thank you for your help.

A: I can't answer that question. If it has been in the ground and doing well for a couple of years the shrub may have suffered winter kill. Willows are strong plants and if cut back hard will spring back quickly. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
