Ornamental Pear Tree Limbs Are Breaking Off In Middle

Question From: R. Spence - Willows, California, United States
Q: 15 to 20 yr old pear (ornamental, Dancer), planted in lawn covered yard, suddenly has limbs breaking off, not at a joint but in the middle,or close, of the limb. Sprinkler system applies approx 1" of water per week. This is the 2nd breakage this summer, w/2 last year. Summer here has been pretty hot but we have seen hotter. We also have been troubled with some Fire blight but not treated.

A: Your DANCER has a relatively short life span - 20 to 25 years at best. Not treating it for fireblight has weakened the tree and possible lack of water in hot dry conditions hasn't helped. I would get an onsite inspection from a certified arborist - www.tcia.org or begin looking for a replacement. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
