Over-Wintering Canna Lilies Have Jelly-Like Substance Oozing From Rhizomes

Question From: West Sayville, New York, United States
Q: I am inspecting my canna lilies that are overwintering. I have found the there is an amber colored, jelly-like substance oozing from some of the rhizomes. What is this and should I be worried?

A: Doesn't sound good. Before storing professionals suggest dipping them in a 10 percent bleach solution and allowing them to dry to prevent rot. I would separate them from those that look healthy, Do the bleach bit and store them so they don't touch. If they are mushy to the touch discard them. They should be stored in 40 to 50 degrees. Good Luck, Nancy
