Overwintering Black Gum Tree And Dogwood

Question From: S. Reeder - PENNSYLVANIA
Q: I got gifted a baby blackgum tree. Its about 3 feet tall. Should I plant it before the Pittsburgh winter. Or should I keep it in the house til spring? I also have a baby Dogwood already planted in the spring. Any tips to have it survive the zone 6 winter?

A: This tree needs a dormant period so do not bring it indoors. I'd overwinter it in an attached garage or tool shed. It should be in the dark. The soil in the pot should slightly moist, so give it a sip of water few weeks. Best Nancy
