Question From: M. Vacca - Massachusetts, United States
Q: My very large, beautiful River Birch tree has black spot disease and needs a fungicide but how do I spray such a large tree? Is there something I can add to the soil?
A: If it were my tree I would hire a certified arborist to do the job. I never recommend "home" treatment of large trees. To find a professional in your area go to www.tcia.org and enter your zip code. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
Q: Hello again, I did talk to an arborist – he said he could spray the tree, he would ‘tent’ it, and it would cost $$$! So I am wondering – Is there something I can add to the soil? That would get absorbed by the tree? The cost of the arborist is so expensive that we can’t afford that route. It would be cheaper to take the tree down ☹ I am searching for a last ditch alternative. Thanks!!
A: Take samples of the leaves or branches and photos to an independent garden center or nursery in your area that sell these trees for recommendations for control. Do keep the tree watered so the soil remains moist at all times. Good Luck. Best Nancy
