Sandhill Cranes Are Eating Garden Plants

Question From: K. WEAVER - Waterford Township, Michigan, United States
Q: We have sandhill cranes who have no compunction about entering our subdivision gardens and eating our tulips, etc. I am particularly upset about a huge bed of tall lilies that they demolished last year. I have used your trick of filling stockings with kitty litter but I am not sure that these birds have any sense of smell. What do you advise? Thank you for all your many years of being so passionate and knowledgeable.

I have no experience with these birds, but my brother used black plastic garbage bags stapled to wooden poles (Flag like) that were driven into the ground to keep Canadian Geese off his lawn. You might try it. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
