Shasta Daisy Flowers Are Spiky Small And Brown

Question From: FLORIDA
Q: My Shasta daisies are very healthy in their foliage. I just put one plant in a planter this year. However, the flowers are spiky and small and brownish. What is my problem?

A: Your plant has a virus called aster yellows. There is no cure, but it will spread to other members of the aster family. Dig it out and dispose of it, roots and all, in the trash. I would not plant another aster family plant in that area this season. For more information do a Google search on aster yellows virus. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
