Should Deadheaded Shasta Daisies That Produce No More Flowers Be Cut Back Further

Question From: E. Markiw - Springfield, Oregon, United States
Q: We suffered a drought in Oregon. We are still suffering a drought. I did not water my Shasta Daisy bed. Slowly the blooms died. I cut off all the blooms, started watering, but there is no more flower production. The foliage is healthy, and about 3 to 4 feet tall. It is now the end of August. The drought will continue. Should I cut back all the foliage? Should I keep watering the stems, which do not have leaves on them.

Cut the plants back to the basal growth and continue to water them so the soil stays moist but is not sodden. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
