Should Dwarf Lilac Bushes Be Pruned To Maintain Height And Make Them More Full

Question From: New Lisbon, Wisconsin, United States
Q: How low to ground should dwarf continually flowering lilac bushs be trimmed. They are 3 years old and have never been trimmed and are now over 3' tall, which is as tall as I want them to be in the spot they are. Am thinking they will bush out more and become thicker after trimming.

They should not grow too much taller. Cut three of the oldest trunks back to round level yearly to keep it full and productive. Shorten the branches after the first flush of blooms if they have grown beyond your required height. Here's a link with more information on pruning these grafted shrubs:  <a data-cke-saved-href="https://gardening.yardener.com/ajax/3D%22http://homeguides.sfgate.com/prune-miniature-lilacs-44099=" href="https://gardening.yardener.com/ajax/3D%22http://homeguides.sfgate.com/prune-miniature-lilacs-44099=" ..html"="" style="font-family: Times; font-size: medium;">http://homeguides.sfgate.com/prune-miniature-lilacs-44099.html Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
