Should Grass Be Grown Under Mountain Ash Tree

Question From: j. Foresman - NORTH CAROLINA
Q: with respect to a mountain ash. Is it ok for grass to grow around its trunk, or is mulch better?

A good organic mulch spread to the edge of the canopy at a depth of 3 to 4 inches is your best bet. Keep it about 4 inches from the trunk of the tree. Grass competes with the roots of the tree for much needed moisture. Home owners also use herbicides on the lawns that are detrimental to the tree. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
