Should Hollyhock Be Mulched With Straw For Overwintering

Question From: M. Margot Whitworth - Dryden, Michigan, United States
Q: I have many little (about 1" tall) hollyhocks that have come up from seeds from my big plant - will they last thru the winter - should I cover them with straw? thank you

A: The hollyhocks should return in spring, grow tall and flower. Mulching them with straw should not be necessary, but should we have a polar vortex, it's good insurance. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
