Should Katsura Tree Trunk With Large Splits Be Removed

Question From: Charter Township of Clinton, Michigan, United States
Q: I read your information on Katsura trees. I have a Katsura tree with three trunks that is about 15 years old. The trunk that faces southwest has developed large splits that may be the same as you describe. Over the past 5 years, the branches on that trunk are almost all dead. I'm sure the branches should be removed but what about the trunk itself? Would removing it damage the rest of the tree or protect it?

If the most of the branches are dead you may as well remove it as it can no longer support life. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
