Should Lower Branches Of Pine Tree Be Removed

Question From: C. McDanel - Yucca Valley, California, United States
Q: We have an 11 or 12 year old pine (purchased as a small live Christmas tree) and were told not to trim away the lower branches as they provided protection for the tree. We have never trimmed them but now our pine tree looks more like a very tall pine bush. We can see the trunk but large and small branches are still covering the trunk to the ground. Should we trim these off? I'm not sure what kind of tree it is, but I do know it grows 1 ft. a year. I could send a picture but my camera's battery is dead. I'm charging it so if you need a picture please let me know. Thanks. Cinda

A: I recommend you enlist the services of a professional and get an onsite inspection. I am not a tree specialist and I live in Michigan . To find a certified arborist in your area go to www.tcia.org. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
