Question From: d. mcwilliams - Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, United States
Q: I planted 7 large (6ft) skip laurels in September. did not protect them with burlap or spray (didn't realize). They are burnt beyond belief now. Its April 9, I've heavily watered them once or twice. Was going to give them some holly-tone in a week or so when it warms up. Ive read that patience is needed with laurels. Do I wait for the burned leaves to fall off? I can deal with an ugly season, just hoping that they don't die completely. Help! Thanks
A: Dina, Hopefully the latent buds beneath the dead leaves are alive and will emerge. This may happen later than normal, so do be patient. Fertilizer should be spread before the plants leaf out so apply it now, according to package directions. Mulching around the Laurels with a good organic material at a depth of 3 to 4 inches will also be helpful. Do keep them watered, but don't drown them. The soil around the root ball should be kept moist. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
