Question From: E. Martin - OHIO
Q: My snowball tree bark exuding caramel-like substance at base; If I push the bark around that area, it gives - so I'm guessing that the mystery substance is under it, too. The bark is covered in lichen and moss growth and many limbs are dead. Do you have any idea what would cause the caramel-like ooze?
A: My guess is your viburnum has a fungal disease and the oozing comes from cankers. Take photos and samples to an independent garden enter or nursery that sells these shrubs for an accurate ID and control. Hopefully you have caught it early. In the mean time keep it will watered.
