Spireas Have No Flowers In Spring After Winter Pruning

Question From: T. Brock - TEXAS
Q: The last couple of years we haven't had any white flowers on our Spireas in the Spring. We have been trimming them down in the winter when they lose their leaves and turn brown.

Tricia, If you're talking about the old fashioned shrub, often called Bridal Wreath, that blooms in spring, it blooms on old wood and you are cutting off all the flower buds. Prune it after it blooms and fertilize it lightly with Espoma Plant Tone. Taking our 1/3 of the branches annually might be a better way to keep it sized. Happy Yardening, Nancy
