Surrounding Plant With Gravel To Prevent Gopher Digging

Question From: R. Fusco - Alpine, California, United States
Q: I wonder if 1" gravel placed in a trench around a plant will stop gophers from digging into the plant? It seems to me that the gopher would have a lot of difficulty moving the "rocks" to tunnel. Any thoughts/references? Thank you, Robert Fusco

A: Robert, we don't have gophers in Michigan so I have no experience with these animals. I would lay down a sheet of metal hardware cloth and then add the gravel. I recommend using crushed gravel as the sharp edges will make digging painful. Good Luck, Nancy
