Sweet Autumn Clematis Appears Dead And Some Pulled Up Roots Have Small Round Worms On Them

Question From: Rochester, Michigan, United States
Q: Our Sweet Autumn Clematis is in serious trouble. It was healthy and beautiful this fall and now appears dead. When some of the roots are pulled up there is a small round-like worm on them. It has been growing on our arbor for 8 years. What happened?

Sounds to me like your plant was attacked by vine weevil grubs. The are tiny, white with gold brown heads and feed on the roots. There may have been signs of wilting last fall and you may have missed them. Bayer Tree and Shrub in a liquid form can zap them. Sorry for your loss. Best Nancy
