Swiss Chard Has Pale Yellow Lower Leaves

Question From: ARIZONA
Q: I live in Phoenix. Lettuce, kale, bok choy, spinach is growing quite well. Swiss chard is having a lot of completely pale yellow bottom leaves. Rest of plant is fine. Planted in 2 foot deep container. Rest of plants are too. What could be causing this? Have grown chard for years, very successfully. Weather has been perfect for growing, so can't be that. Thanks

A:

Sorry for the delay Colleen, your question got caught in my draft basket. I'm stumped on this one. Most diseases of Chard produce spots or marks on the leaves. Yellowing is often a lack of nitrogen. A buildup of salts from chemical fertilizers will also cause yellowing. If you are using containers I would try fresh soil and use a fish and kelp emulsion fertilizer. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
