Transplanting Mature Butter Lettuce

Question From: L. Matilla - CALIFORNIA
Q: I purchased a butter lettuce with the roots intact. I'd like to plant it into my garden. Is this possible? If so how do I plant it in February in southern California???

A:

That plant is mature and may not do well. Also, if the plant was grown hydroponically, it has water roots and may not be able to adjust to life in the soil.  I live in Michigan and am not familiar with gardening in southern california,. But I do know that lettuce needs rich fluffy soil that stays moist and 6 hours of sun a day. It will not be happy in the heat. Good Luck and Happy Yardening. Nancy
