Trumpet Vine Has Cream Colored Bumps On Stems

Question From: D. Webb - San Diego, California, United States
Q: We have these nasty little pests on about 20 feet of the 60 feet of trumpet vine on our back fence. I cannot find any reference or pictures of this pest on the Internet. Can you tell me what it is and how to get rid of it? Thanks!

A: I believe they are a type of scale - an insect that produces a protective coating. Tuck a couple of samples into a sealed baggie and take it to a nursery or independent garden center for a positive Id and recommendation for an insecticide. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
