Violets Have White Sticky Stuff Where Leaves Join The Trunk

Question From: Bonita, California, United States
Q: My violets show a white kind of sticky "stuff" by the place the leaves join the trunk. What is it, and what can I do?

A: Those are mealy bugs and you can treat them with insecticidal soap or a home made spray of a table spoon of dish washing liquid to a quart of water. It may take a couple of applications to control them. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy

Q: Thank you for your quick response, but if I spray the violets on the leaves, won't that kill the plant? Thanks Karen

A: Treat them in the early evening and they should be fine. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
