What Causes Four Inch Diameter Round Balls Of Dead Grass On Lawn

Question From: E. Saracino - Woodbury, Connecticut, United States
Q: Hi there. I have found several perfectly round balls of dead grass about 4 in diameter on my lawn recently. It is a soft ball of material that could be a nest but in an odd location on an open lawn. When I lift it, there is a corresponding patch of dirt round and 4" in diameter. There is no hole on the ground signifying a tunnel. What is causing this? Thank you.

The only thing I can think of is an artsy skunk. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
