What Is Cutting Off My Zinnia Blossoms

Question From: D. Bailey - Dalton, Ohio, United States
Q: My whole blossom is cut off and laying beside the plant. What is causing this and how do I get rid of them. Thank you

A: Could be deer, the stem would be somewhat shredded. Could be a wood chuck - the stem would be clean cut. If they are tiny it could be a cut worm - a fairly clean cut. A deer repellant will keep deer and rabbits at bay. A product containing Bt will take care of cutworms. Wood chuck are tough. In the country they shoot them. You can also trap them with a havaheart trap. They love cantaloupe - the riper the better. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
