What Plants Will Do Well Near My Magnolia Tree And How Does The Tree Affect Nearby Plants

Question From: G. Foucher - Sarasota, Florida, United States
Q: I have a problem with plantings not doing well when planted near my magnolia tree. Do magnolia trees affect other plantings nearby and if so, what low shrubs or flowers can I plant between 6- 15 feet from the tree? The area has direct sun and shade during the day in Sarasota, Florida.

A: The only effect the tree has on the shrub might be competition for water and sun. Full sun plants need 6 hours or more direct sun a day. Part shade plant do with 4 hours. I live in Michigan so can't recommend plants for Fla. Take photos and visit a good local independent garden center that sells shrubs for advice. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
