What To Plant For Year-Round Privacy In Shady Part Of Yard

Question From: IOWA
Q: Hello, We are looking to add conifers for year around green/privacy screens to our side (along/near fence blocking out neighbors cluttered side yard) north facing front yard that is heavily shaded by a large oak and maple tree (very shallow roots are showing) which leads us to hemlocks and yews. We notice thinning hemlock trees in heavily shaded areas. Will dwarf hemlock bushes maintain form in heavily shaded areas, if so, what variety? Should we look to buy hemlock trees and shape them annually - or nothing at all? Less is more, so we keep the area uncluttered and do not want to add anything that will look burned out or wispy. Thank you!

A: I suggest you take photos of the site and samples of the soil to an independent garden center that offers landscape design services. They will better be able to advise you and will know what varieties are sold and do well in your area. Larger nursesies and garden centers often do onsite consulting, which would lis what I recommend. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
