When And How To Prune Clematis And Why Do Irises Not Flower

Question From: i. Feigenbaum - NEW YORK
Q: I have various clematis vines, how far back to i cut them in the fall and when. This the third year and I say there are thousands of flowers. how do you grow more from there seeds. also I have planted about 10 irises, they get the long leaf stems but no flowers. Why

Sorry for the delay in answering Irwin. When and how to prune your clematis depends on the variety. When they bloom take a flower to your local independent garden center for an ID and pruning recommendations. Clematis are not easy to grow from seed. Better to take cutting in early summer and root them. Irises fail to flower if the rhizomes are buried too deep. You should be able to see the top part of the toe. Lack of sun may also be an issue. They need 6 hours of sun a day. Hope this helps, Happy Yardening Nancy
