When And How To Transplant Andromeda

Question From: OREGON
Q: When can a 6yr old andromeda shrub be move and what the best way to do that?

Robin, Fall is the very best time to transplant andromeda, however lots of folks do it after the shrub has bloomed. Water it well three days prior. Andromedas like direct sun, but shade in the after heat of the afternoon. Dig your new hole first - about twice the width of the root ball. Take as much of the roots as you can and be sure the new planting is at soil level. Planting it a tad bit higher will allow for settling. Water it well and mulch with 3 to 4 inches of organic mulch. Do not fertilize till next year, but be sure to keep the ground moist at all times. Happy Yardening, Nancy
