Question From: J. Reid - Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, United States
Q: At what time in the fall/early winter season should I put up burlap screens on my fragile shrubs? I will be screening newly planted Hydrangeas as well as Rhododendrons and Azeleas that get northern wind. I have heard conflicting views (e.g wait until after the first frost; wait until it snows once; wait until the temp is consistently below freezing during the night). I would greatly appreciate your advice.
A: Screeing with burlap can be done now. I use a true killing frost as a bell weather. The burlap protects the plants from freezing winds that burn the leaves and buds. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
