When Should Hydrangeas Be Trimmed Down

Question From: B. Lappetito - Livonia, Michigan, United States
Q: When do you recommend that Hydrangeas be trimmed down for the winter...Spring or Fall???? Ever????

Hydrangeas do not need pruning, unless you wish to reduce the size of the shrub. When to prune depends on the kind of hydrangea you are growing. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy

Comment: I have heard that Hydrangeas like an acid soil and therefore putting ones used coffee grounds at it's roots are beneficial....Is that true?????????B

The spent coffee grounds are a good source of organics, but most of the acidity leached out with the coffee and should not be considered an amendment used to raise the pH of the soil. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
